TULSA, Okla. – Emily Watson struck out 14 and Rylie Spell homered as Tulsa shutout No. 23/24 Oklahoma State in front of a sellout crowd of 1,128 on Wednesday night at Collins Family Softball Complex.
Watson yielded just three hits and a pair of walks en route to her 27th career shutout as the Golden Hurricane (19-11) topped the Cowgirls (21-7) for the 11th time in the last 12 matchups. The senior improved to 3-1 with 48 strikeouts in 25 innings against Oklahoma State, who saw its 12-game winning streak come to an end with its first shutout defeat of the campaign.
Watson struck out the side three times and retired 11 consecutive batters through the middle innings.
Spell's homer was her third in the last seven days, while Morgan Neal tied a school single-game record with two triples as part of a 3-for-3 night at the plate.
Neal roped a one-out triple to right field in the bottom of the first, but OSU starter Emmie Robertson got out of the jam to keep the contest scoreless. Robertson would not escape the second unscathed as Spell crushed the first pitch of her at-bat over the wall in left for a 1-0 lead.
Pitching with the lead, Watson settled into a groove and started her run of 11 consecutive batters retired after a one-out walk in the second. Eight of those 11 outs came via strikeout and the Cowgirls did not get another hit until Maddi Holcomb opened the sixth with a single.
The second Hurricane run came in the bottom of the fifth, when Neal's second three-bagger of the night plated Julia Hollingsworth. A carbon-copy of her hit in the first, Neal placed the ball just inside the right-field foul line and the speedy Hollingsworth came home for the 2-0 advantage.
Watson got a lift from her defense in the top of the sixth when Taylor Lynch reached base with a walk after Holcomb's infield single. With one out, Madi Sue Montgomery lined to Tori Stafford at first base and the junior snared the liner and dove to apply a tag on Lynch for an unassisted double-play to end the inning.
The Cowgirls brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh after a two-out single, but Watson recorded her 14th and final punchout of the night to end the contest. The senior improved to 11-4 on the season with the victory.
Tulsa will look to take momentum from the victory into American Athletic Conference play, which opens this weekend (March 23-25) with a three-game series at UCF (18-11).
