HOUSTON – Julia Hollingsworth went 2-for-3 at the plate, but Sarah Queen's two-run homer provided the only runs of the contest as Houston took game one of a three-game American Athletic Conference series against Tulsa, 2-0, on Friday night at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
Sarah Briers had the only other hit for the Golden Hurricane, who fell to 26-19 on the season and 6-7 in league play. Emily Watson took the loss (16-10) as she allowed seven hits and a pair of walks with eight strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Savannah Heebner guided the Cougars (28-16, 7-6) to the victory with seven shutout innings to improve to 19-7 in the circle. She gave up just three hits and did not walk a batter to go along with two strikeouts.
A pair of walks in the bottom of the first helped Houston load the bases with just one out, but Watson avoided any damage with two strikeouts to end the threat. TU had hits in two of the first three innings and was unable to score.
In the bottom of the third, Queen followed a single by Kaylin Crumpton with her two-out, two-run homer over the wall in left-center. The blast was Crumpton's seventh of the campaign and it would prove to be the only runs of the night for either side.
Heebner retired nine straight TU hitters before Hollingsworth's second single of the game in the top of the six, however it would be the last hit for the visitors. Heebner then retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to close out the 2-0 victory.
The Hurricane will look to even the series when the teams meet again at noon on Saturday, April 21.
