MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Baylee Smith's three-run homer was all of the offense that either team could muster as Memphis defeated Tulsa, 3-0, in the series-opener on Friday night at Tigers Softball Stadium.
Morgan Neal and Shannon Hughes each had hits for the Golden Hurricane (27-21, 7-9), while Emily Watson took the loss with three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Molly Smith allowed just two hits and struck out eight to improve to 23-6 for the Tigers (35-16, 9-7). Kyler Trosclair and Smith each produced a pair of hits to lead the Memphis offense.
Neal had a one-out single in the top of the first before Molly Smith settled in and did not give up another hit until Hughes' double to open the fifth inning. The Tigers jumped ahead with its three runs in the bottom of the third.
After a one-out walk and a hit-batter, Baylee Smith hit her second homer of the season to put the home squad ahead 3-0. The blast cleared the wall in left field and would prove to be the only runs of the contest.
Tulsa had its best scoring opportunity in the fifth after Hughes' leadoff double. However, Molly Smith retired the next three TU batters to end the threat.
From there, Molly Smith gave up just one walk and closed out the contest with a perfect top of the seventh for the victory.
The teams will meet in game two of the series, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.
