WICHITA, Kan. – Shannon Hughes' two-run homer in the seventh inning of the series finale helped lift Tulsa to a 3-2 win over Wichita State to claim the three-game set on Sunday at Wilkins Stadium.
Morgan Neal and Julia Hollingsworth each recorded four hits over the final two games of the series, which were pushed back to Sunday due to cold weather and rain in the Wichita area. The Golden Hurricane (25-15, 5-4) saw its five-game winning streak come to an end when the Shockers (22-14, 5-4) took the first game of the day, 14-5, before bouncing back to win the final game and the series.
Wichita State jumped ahead in the final game of the weekend with two runs in the second on back-to-back homers from Ryleigh Buck and Paige Luellen.
That's where the score stood entering the final frame. Rylie Spell walked to start the top of the seventh before being lifted for pinch runner Jesse Smith. Hughes then tied the score when she took the second pitch of her at-bat over the wall in left-center field for her first round-tripper of the season.
With two outs, Hollingsworth singled, stole second and scored on an error for the 3-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Shockers loaded the bases with a pair of hits and a walk, but Emily Watson nailed down the victory with a grounder to end the contest. Watson moved to 16-6 with six strikeouts in the contest.
In the opening game of the day, Wichita State jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Golden Hurricane put up four runs in the top of the fourth.
Shelby Estocado and Neal each had two-run doubles in the inning as TU trimmed the deficit to 5-4. However, the Shockers responded with nine runs in the bottom of the panel to extend the advantage to 14-4.
TU put another run on the board in the fourth on a run-scoring double by Spell, but WSU retired the side to end the contest, 14-5.
The Hurricane will return home for a three-game set at Collins Softball Complex against USF (29-15, 7-2), April 13-15.
