Barnes Wins 3,000-Meter Steeplechase on Day 2 of American Outdoor Championships

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Ashley Barnes claimed first place in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, as the Tulsa track & field team competed for the second day at Gettler Stadium in the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. The women's team is tied for ninth place and the men are in sixth place overall.
Barnes shattered her personal best, with a time of 10:27.10 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Barnes was in second after the final turn, but turned on the boosters to win the race on the final stretch. Barnes earned her first conference title in any event. Alyssa Bolliger came in fifth with a time of 10:34.28, also a personal best. The two Tulsa runners combined for 14 team points.
Ben Preisner took fourth place in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:02.13. Austin Del Rosso finished in fifth place, with a mark of 9:12.03. The two combined for nine points for the men's team.
Aleks Rapp gave the men five more points, when he placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 50.96 meters (167-2.29).
Aaliyah Birmingham qualified for the finals of the 400-meters, when she posted a time of 54.81, which was the third fastest time. Breonna Hall finished with a time of 55.78, which was sixth best, while Ca'Purnika Galbert had the seventh-best time of 55.80.
Avery Culpepper qualified for the finals of the 1,500-meters, as she notched the ninth-best time of 4:37.19.
With a time of 1:00.41, Kiarra Reed posted the fourth-fastest mark in the 400-meter hurdles and qualified for the finals.
Bailey Stewart ran the 400-meters in a time of 47.57, which was the sixth best and qualified him for the finals.
Grey Howard and Robert Tully both qualified for the finals of the 800-meters. Howard's time of 1:51.79 was third and Tully's time of 1:52.01 was fourth.
Ellis Coon recorded the fourth-best time in the 1,500-meters, while Mark Middleton posted the seventh-best mark. Coon ran a 3:56.56 and Middleton ran a 3:56.59. Both men qualified for the 1,500-meter finals.
Henry Visser will be competing in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles after posting a time of 51.97, for fifth best.
Tulsa will compete in the final day of the 2018 American Outdoor Championships on Sunday, May 13. Field events start at 10 a.m. with the men's javelin and track events begin at 4:30 p.m. with the women's 4x400-meter relay.
