THE SPECIALISTS
Tulsa loses the school's all-time scoring leader in placekicker Redford Jones, but returns its punter, deep snapper and holder for the 2018 campaign.
Thomas Bennett (6-3, 180) returns as Tulsa's punter, while Adam Higuera will be back as Tulsa's deep snapper. Bennett also handled the holding duties on placements last year.
Bennett averaged 42.3 yards on 61 punts with 11 50+ yard punts and 16 landing inside the 20-yard line.
"I thought Adam came in and did a really consistent job snapping as a true freshman," said Montgomery. "Thomas punted the ball well last year. His consistency and placement continued to improve during the spring."
"We have to replace Redford. He was Mr. Dependability and replacing him will be a tall task," said Montgomery.
During the spring, Tulsa had a handful of kickers competing to replace Jones as Tulsa's field goal, PAT and kickoff specialist. Vying to replace Jones are seniors Nate Walker (5-9, 172) and Tristan Lacey (5-11, 186) and newcomers John Parker Romo (5-11, 171) and Kevin Neitzke (6-3, 172).
Walker has been second on the depth chart behind Jones the past two seasons, while Lacey has also added depth. The two newcomers in the spring – Romo and Neitzke – will also have an opportunity to compete for the stating position.
