TULSA, Okla. –– "It's time to write a new story. It's a new season. Page 1 of chapter 1 was today. Our guys are playing with an edge about themselves," said Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery.
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team was on Harwell Field Friday morning for the opening of preseason camp and practiced for 2+ hours in 88-degree temperatures.
"Without getting a chance to see the video, I really liked our energy. We came out with a lot of juice today. I thought our guys played very detail oriented today, and that's been our theme all the way through since January. They were paying attention to the little things," said Philip Montgomery.
"Defensively, we were flying around. We had a several interceptions in our skeleton period. I like to see those guys being able to pin back and really play fast. Our receivers were moving at a good clip and had a couple of big plays down the field. Right now, without pads on its hard to run the football, but we still had a chance to run it a little bit today."
"Overall, I was pleased with the effort today. Obviously. we have a lot of work to do," added Montgomery.
Montgomery was asked about position battles as he met the media following practice.
"We'll have a good battle at quarterback. We'll have a good battle at some of those receiver spots. Up front especially at right guard, Tiller (Bucktrot) did a great job all spring and it's really his job to lose, but there's going to be some competition at that spot," said Montgomery.
"When you look at it defensively, we're talking about all those safeties (Manny Bunch, Jordan Mitchell, McKinley Whitfield) and then we have the young ones that got a lot of experience last year and all of spring ball. There's going to be some competition there. I think really at the linebacker spots too. Cooper (Edmiston) is coming back and he's done a tremendous job. Craig (Suits) is now coaching with us instead of playing, so there's a big battle for WILL linebacker. I think we've got 4-6 guys at linebacker that we can rotate in there and feel really comfortable about. So, there's going to be a lot of competition and a lot of battles, but we're going to need everybody to get through the season," added Montgomery.
