NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tulsa volleyball squad (4-2) defeated UMBC (2-4) in its final match of the Bruiser Showcase on Saturday (25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 25-21). The meeting was the first in program history between the teams.

To kick off the match, sophomore Callie Cook added two kills on her first two attempts to knot the score up at 5. After a 5-0 TU run in the middle of the set, Cook would continue her hot start, finishing the frame with five kills and a .625 hitting percentage. The Golden Hurricane would clinch the set, 25-22.

Freshman Elyse Savadove would make her presence felt in the second set, adding three kills on a .750 hitting percentage. The Hurricane would go on a 3-0 and 4-0 run in the middle of the set, but the Retrievers would move on to take the frame, 25-20.

The third set would start a tightly-contested one, but Tulsa broke away to take it, 25-18. Contributing to a 7-1 run in the middle of the frame, senior Emily Thorson managed six kills in the set.

Freshman Hannah Overmyer and Savadove stepped up and added four and six kills, respectively, in the fourth set. Junior Taylor Horsfall bolstered the defense in the final frame, tallying nine digs. Tulsa would clinch the match, 25-21.

As a team, TU recorded three separate season highs in the match. Horsfall recorded a season high with 27 digs in the win. Thorson added another 2018 high in kills with 15, while setter Mariah Pardo accumulated the third season high with 28 assists. As a team, Tulsa put two athletes on the all-tournament team in Cook and Moore, both having strong weekends offensively.

The victory ends the Bruiser Showcase on a high note, as Tulsa hosts the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational as its 2018 home opener next weekend. The tournament is scheduled for Sept. 7-8, and includes Abilene Christian, Northwestern State and ORU.
