The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped a 76-44 decision to Houston on Saturday afternoon at the Fertitta Center in Houston, Texas. TU fell to 9-10 on the season and 3-3 in American Athletic Conference play, while UH moved to 10-9 overall and 4-2 in the league.
"Crystal and Kendrian only played six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, so when you can't have your best two inside scorers in the game it affects your offensive flow," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "Then we made it even more difficult on ourselves by having turnovers and giving up transition points. Having those two on the floor in the third quarter made a big difference."
Rebecca Lescay had a team-best 13 points, while Crystal Polk added nine points, and Desiree Lewis pulled down five rebounds.
"Rebecca was our biggest threat with what we were trying to do, which was attack them and be aggressive," Mossman said. "She showed no fear and got to the basket today."
After getting down 8-2 with five minutes to play in the first quarter, TU battled back to take a 9-8 lead at the 3:46 mark. The Cougars then went on a 9-2 scoring run for a 17-11 advantage at the end of the first frame, as foul trouble plagued the Golden Hurricane. At the 4:23 mark of the first period, Polk, Maddie Bittle and Kendrian Elliott all had two fouls.
In the second quarter, Houston outscored Tulsa 30-6, tying a season-high points scored in a quarter by a TU opponent, and went into the locker room up 47-17.
Tulsa had a 21-17 scoring advantage over Houston in the third quarter, but trailed 64-38 with one frame to play. Lescay and Polk both had seven of TU's points in the quarter.
In the final frame, Houston outscored Tulsa, 12-6, for the final 32-point victory.
Houston had a 50-34 lead in rebounds, a 19-8 advantage in assists, a 12-7 edge in steals and a 3-1 lead in blocks.
Tulsa shot 32-percent from the field, including just 14-percent from behind the arc, and 33-percent (2-of-6) from the free throw line, while Houston shot 43-percent from the field, 41-percent from three-point range and 56-percent (13-of-23) from the line.
Tatyana Hill had a team-best 17 points, while Dorian Branch added 15 and Octavia Barnes totaled 13. Branch and Serithia Hawkins both had 10 rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action on Tuesday, January 29 against Temple. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
