
TU Falls 61-55 to Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. —Tulsa (16-9, 8-5 American) fell to Florida Atlantic (12-13, 6-7 American) on Saturday, 61-55, at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena in Boca Raton, despite holding a 48-36 advantage in rebounds.
The Golden Hurricane was led by a pair of double-doubles by redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick and junior guard Jade Clack. Riddick finished as the team leader in scoring with 17 points to go with 11 boards, while Clack finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Clack also contributed team-highs of three assists, three blocks and two steals.
Junior guard Mady Cartwright also put up 12 points for her 19th double-figure scoring game of the season and 46th of her career.
The game commenced with the Golden Hurricane taking an early lead, capitalizing on fast breaks and bench contributions. After multiple turnovers by both teams in the first four minutes, Mady Cartwright scored a jumper on a fast break to put them ahead 2-1. Shamaryah Duncan extended the lead with a three-pointer at 5:24, assisted by Haven Fisher, pushing the score to 5-1. The Owls responded with Erin Rodgers' jumper, narrowing the gap to 5-3. However, Tulsa maintained control, with Jade Clack's layup at 1:39, assisted by Layla-J Cameron, keeping them in front. Despite Destyne Jackson's late layup for Florida Atlantic, Tulsa concluded the quarter leading 11-8.
Tulsa's momentum in the second quarter was initiated by Cartwright's layup, followed quickly by a three-pointer from Cameron, assisted by Clack, extending the lead to 16-8. Despite Tulsa's early lead, the Owls responded with a series of plays, including a jumper by Rodgers and a three-pointer from Jackson, evening the score at 18 with 4:25 remaining. Florida Atlantic continued their offensive push with a three-pointer by Madi Gewirtz, assisted by Jackson, giving them a 24-18 lead. Tulsa's Hannah Riddick managed a tip-in to narrow the gap to 24-22, but a layup by Vivian Onugha secured an 18-11 quarter for Florida Atlantic, flipping the score to 26-22 by the end of the quarter.
The Owls maintained their narrow lead throughout the third quarter, opening with a series of layups from Onugha, who added eight points during the period. Tulsa's Cartwright responded with a three-pointer at 8:57, assisted by Clack, to keep the score within reach. Despite Tulsa's efforts, including a late 3-pointer by Rylee Grays with one second remaining, the Owls held a 45-41 advantage at the end of the quarter. Both teams scored 19 points in a competitive period, marked by strong defensive efforts and timely scoring.
In the final quarter, Cartwright initiated scoring with a jumper just six seconds in, narrowing the gap to 45-43. Grace Carstensen of the Owls responded with two successful free throws, maintaining a narrow lead. Riddick's consistent performance, including a layup at 8:52 and a jumper at 4:03, kept Tulsa within striking distance. However, the Owls' Jess Moors solidified their advantage with a layup at 1:28 and a free throw with seven seconds remaining, sealing a 61-55 victory. Despite Tulsa's efforts, including several late attempts by Cartwright, the Owls held on to secure the win.
Tulsa will return to action at home to face UAB (10-14, 3-9 American) on Friday, February 20, at 6:30 p.m. for the Golden Hurricane's Play for Kay Pink Game.
