Celebrating 150 Years of College Football
In honor of College Football celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019, TulsaHurricane.com will recognize some of the most memorable moments and exciting plays in the history of The University of Tulsa football each week throughout the season.
Tulsa is in its 120th season of fielding a football team. The Tulsa gridiron tradition started as Henry Kendall College in 1895 with the first team posting a 1-0-0 record lead by coach Norman Leard. There were a few seasons in the early years that Kendall College did not field a team, but later becoming The University of Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane football teams have amassed 600+ wins in school history.
This 150th College Football Anniversary moment we take a HISTORICAL LOOK this week at a Golden Hurricane trip to the White House.
Tulsa Visits the White House Before Taking on George Washington
A bright spot on the 1931 season was Tulsa's longest road trip in many years, a journey to Washington D.C., for a return matchup against the George Washington University Colonels, a game Tulsa won a year earlier at Skelly Stadium 14-7.
While in the capital, Coach Gloomy Gus Henderson took his squad to the White House, where the players personally met the 31st President of the Untied Stats, Herbert Hoover.
A day later, the Golden Hurricane completely 'razzle-dazzled' the Colonels out of their own park. Tulsa scored six plays after the opening kickoff, on a play that drew applause from the Washington crowd. At their own 10-yard line, Tulsa's Ishmael Pilkington was back in regular punt formation when he tossed a short pass to Billy Boehm and the speedster rans 90 yards for the score.
The final score was Tulsa 24, George Washington 7.
