Kendrian Elliott, Rebecca Lescay and Addison Richards all scored in double digits for Tulsa, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane dropped a 73-63 decision at Abilene Christian on Thursday night at Moody Coliseum in Abilene, Texas. TU fell to 3-5 on the season, while the Wildcats moved to 6-1 overall.
Elliott and Lescay both had a team-best 16 points, while Richards added 14 points off a career-high three trey's. Elliott also had a team-leading seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the contest.
The Golden Hurricane was called for 22 fouls in the game, compared to the Wildcats six, and ACU had a 41-30 advantage in rebounds, including a 15-9 lead on the offensive end.
"The difference in the game was them shooting 16 free throws and us shooting three," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We had a great scoring second half, we got Kendrian the ball and I thought we were a total different team on offense. Unfortunately, we were a different team on defense in the second half as well, and that wasn't in our favor. The other factor was the number of offensive rebounds they had. We just couldn't keep them off the boards."
There were four tied scores and three lead changes in the first quarter, but ACU had a 14-12 advantage at the end of the frame. Elliott picked up two fouls in the first 10 minutes, which put her on the bench for the remainder of the half.
The Golden Hurricane tied the score at 14-14 to begin the second quarter, but Abilene Christian went on a 6-0 run to take a 20-14 lead at the 6:29 mark. TU battled back with an 8-2 run and tied it at 22-all with 4:13 to play in the frame, but the Wildcats put together an 8-2 run of their own to close out the half with a 30-24 advantage.
Tulsa was called for 12 fouls in the first 20 minutes compared to Abilene Christian's four. Emma Duerr went to the bench at the 3:02 mark of the second quarter with three fouls, making her the second big to go to the bench, as well as having starter Desiree Lewis out of the game due to injury.
ACU climbed to a 10-point lead, 40-30, at the 6:35 mark of the third quarter, and owned a 51-40 advantage at the end of the period.
TU cut their deficit to five points, 51-46, at the 8:38 mark, but the Wildcats inched back ahead to an 11-point lead 61-50, at the 6:18 mark. Tulsa cut the difference to six, 61-55, with 3:14 to play and again at 2:15 (63-57), but Abilene Christian outscored the Golden Hurricane, 10-6, to close out the game with a 10-point win (73-63).
ACU was led by Dominique Golightly and Breanna Wright with 22 points apiece, while Makayla Mabry and Anna McLeod both added nine points. Mabry pulled down 11 rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, December 7 at Little Rock beginning at 2:00 pm.
