Golden Hurricane Begin Indoor Track & Field Season at Crimson & Gold Invitational

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa track & field teams begin the 2019-20 indoor season this weekend, as 27 Golden Hurricane (11 men, 16 women) get set to compete at the Crimson & Gold Invitational, hosted by Pittsburg State. The invite starts at 12 noon with select field events. The first track event of the day will be the men's 5,000-meter run at 12:30 p.m.
The men's and women's teams feature youthful squads that will be getting their first taste of competition in Kansas. A combined 27 male and 18 female competitors are either freshmen or sophomores. In total, 14 of 15 first-time participants are freshmen.
Head coach Steve Gulley, who enters his 20th campaign atop the helm, sees this weekend as an opportunity for the newcomers to get their feet wet and see if they're in race shape.
"We want these kids to get a taste of college athletics, so we're excited from that point," Gulley said. "... That's really what we're aiming for, to see if the training they've been doing for the last three months is catching on."
Following the Crimson & Gold Invitational, the teams will go their separate ways for the holidays. The Hurricane will return to action in the new year at the Arkansas Invitational on Friday, January 17, 2020.
