Golden Hurricane Outlasts Cornell on Sunday, 4-3

TULSA, Okla. 
– The University of Tulsa men's tennis squad (9-3) picked up a come-from-behind victory over Cornell (2-4), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon within the confines of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
 
The Big Red managed to take the early advantage in doubles, nabbing wins at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, and a win at the third spot, 6-3. Tulsa's No. 1 doubles duo of Majed Kilani and Jarod Hing were trailing 3-4 when Cornell secured the doubles point.
 
As singles unfolded, Tulsa proved too much in the first sets for the Big Red, taking five of the six first frames. Hing was the first to wrap up, evening the match at 1-all with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Cornell's Eero Vasa.
 
The Big Red regained the lead with a straight-set win at No. 5, as Boriss Kamdem fell 7-6(4), 6-0. Tulsa fought to even the match once again, as sophomore Joshua Goodger tallied a 7-6(4), 7-5 victory in the second position over No. 101 Lev Kazakov to even the match at 2-all.
 
Freshman Kody Pearson gave Tulsa the lead at the No. 3 spot, winning 6-4, 7-6(4) over the Big Red's Daniel Soyfer. With yet another singles victory, Pearson is now 11-1 in solo play on the season for TU.
 
With just the No. 1 and No. 6 singles still to go, Kilani clinched the match for Tulsa with a back-and-forth victory over Cornell's No. 1, Alafia Ayeni, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. In the final match of the afternoon, Cornell's Pietro Rimondini edged out freshman Stefan Hampe, 5-7, 6-4, 3-2 (11-9).
 
The Golden Hurricane get the week to recuperate in preparation of hosting LSU (RV) on Sunday, Feb. 17, at noon CT inside the Case Tennis Center.
