AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Tulsa softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 4-1 victory over Ole Miss before a 9-1 setback against No. 11 Texas on Friday, the opening day of the Texas Invitational.
The Golden Hurricane (8-4) will face the Longhorns (9-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and close the day against Sam Houston State (5-8) at 6 p.m.
Game One
Chenise Delce allowed one run in 4.2 innings in the circle and had two hits in the batter's box, including a go-ahead two-RBI single in the fourth to help lift Tulsa past Ole Miss, 4-1, in the first game of the day.
Julia Hollingsworth and Mikayla Whitten each had two hits and an RBI for the Golden Hurricane, who extended its winning streak to eight games. Kassidy Scott came on in relief and tossed 2.1 innings of one-hit ball to record her third save of the campaign.
The Rebels (6-4) jumped ahead in the top of the second on Brittany Finney's leadoff homer down the left-field line.
The score stood at 1-0 until Tulsa took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth for the 4-1 cushion.
With two outs and a runner on first in the fourth, Alexi Perry doubled to left and Delce brought two home with her single up the middle for the 2-1 lead. An inning later, Whitten's single up the middle brought home pinch-runner Sarah Briers.
Hollingsworth then greeted an Ole Miss relief pitcher with another hit up the middle to plate Whitten for the 4-1 advantage.
Scott shut down a potential rally for the Rebels in the top of the fifth and retired the final seven batters that she faced to close out the victory.
Game Two
Miranda Elish gave up two hits and struck out 11 in five innings of work to help No. 11 Texas snap Tulsa's eight-game winning streak with a 9-1 run-rule victory over the Golden Hurricane on Friday night.
Morgan Neal went 2-for-3 and scored the only run for TU, while Samantha Pochop took the loss in the circle after she allowed two earned runs in four innings of work.
The Hurricane jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Neal legged-out an infield single. Alexis Perry singled to center field and a Texas error let Neal race around the bases to put TU ahead.
However, the Longhorns got that run back in the bottom of the frame and took the lead for good with two runs in the third inning. Texas tacked on two more in the fourth, one in the fifth and ended the game with a three-run sixth inning.
