Box Score | Season Stats

TAMPA, Fla. — The University of Tulsa softball team scored five runs in the top of the first and never looked back on its way to a 10-4 win over USF on Saturday to even the three-game series to open American Athletic Conference play.

Sarah Briers, Morgan Neal and Mikayla Whitten recorded three hits apiece for the Golden Hurricane (20-9, 1-1), who tied a season high with 16 hits. Haley Meinen tied a career high with three RBIs to help the offense, while Neal and Rylie Spell each drove in a pair of runs.

In the circle, Samantha Pochop improved to 7-4 after she allowed just three hits and three earned runs, while striking out eight.

Meanwhile, Lindsey Devitt homered and drove in three runs for the Bulls (23-13, 1-1).

Four of Tulsa's runs in its five-run top of the first came with two outs. Haley Meinen got the Hurricane on the board first with a sacrifice fly. Then with two down, Whitten singled home a run and Spell cleared the bases with a two-RBI hit that was followed by an error for the 5-0 lead.

USF got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but Briers' RBI single up the middle in the third inning pushed the advantage to 6-1. Tulsa answered another USF score with a three-run top of the fourth to extend the cushion to 9-2.

The Hurricane started the three-run rally with three straight hits in the inning as Julia Hollingsworth and Josie Muffley each singled before scoring on Neal's triple to left field. The three-bagger was the fourth of her career and her 11th extra-base hit of the campaign.

Devitt hit her two-run homer in the sixth to pull the Bulls within 9-4, but TU tacked on one more run with a grounder in the top of the seventh.

Pochop then retired the Bulls in the bottom of the frame to close out the 10-4 victory and secure her seventh win of the spring.

Tulsa will look to take the series when the teams meet again at 10 a.m. (CT) on Sunday, March 24.
