TAMPA, Fla. — The University of Tulsa softball team scored three runs over the final five innings to rally for a 3-1 victory on Sunday at USF to take the American Athletic Conference opening-series, two games to one.
Morgan Neal went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI for the Golden Hurricane (21-9, 2-1), while Julia Hollingsworth and Haley Meinen also drove in runs to back another great outing by the Tulsa pitching staff.
Chenise Delce allowed just one run over 5.2 innings and struck out five to improve to 8-3 on the season. She gave way to Kassidy Scott, who tossed a scoreless inning before Samantha Pochop earned her second save by recording the final out.
For the Bulls (23-14, 1-2), Riley Gore provided the only offense for the preseason conference favorites with a solo homer in the bottom of the second. After notching 16 strikeouts in a shutout win on Friday, USF pitcher Georgina Corrick allowed three runs on six hits with four Ks in the loss.
After Gore's solo shot gave the Bulls the lead in the second, Tulsa came right back to tie the score in the top of the third.
With two outs, Josie Muffley singled to advance Hollingsworth to second and she came around to score on Neal's hit to center field.
Two innings later, the Hurricane again struck with two outs to take the lead. With Hollingsworth on second, the Bulls elected to intentionally walk Neal and Meinen made USF pay with an RBI single up the middle for the 2-1 advantage.
Tulsa tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh to extend the cushion to 3-1. Rylie Spell doubled to start the inning and she was replaced by pinch runner Alexis Perry. Perry moved to third and then would score on Hollingsworth's sac fly to center field.
In the bottom of the frame, the Bulls put the tying run on base with two outs before Pochop came on to lock down the final out and close the game.
Tulsa will return to the diamond for a 6 p.m. matchup at No. 2 Oklahoma (28-2) on Wednesday, March 27.
