TULSA, Okla. – Chenise Delce tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10 as Tulsa took game one of the three-game American Athletic Conference series with a 5-1 win over Memphis on Friday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
The freshman yielded just one run, a solo homer in the seventh, as she improved to 9-3 on the season, while the Golden Hurricane improved to 22-10 overall and 3-1 in league play. Delce took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the second straight home start and reached double-digit strikeouts for the second time this spring.
Julia Hollingsworth, Morgan Neal and Mikayla Whitten each recorded two hits, with Neal putting Tulsa ahead for good in the fourth with her first home run of the campaign.
Meanwhile, Ashley Threatt provided the offense for the Tigers (18-15, 2-2) with her fourth homer of the season.
Delce and Memphis starter Mariah Nichols kept the game scoreless through three innings before Neal ripped her homer over the right field fence to start the bottom of the fourth.
Alyssa Dean broke up the no-hit bid with a single to start the sixth and she moved to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt before Delce put the brakes on a potential tying score with two strikeouts.
Tulsa expanded the lead in the sixth with a four-run inning to make it 5-0. Neal started the frame with an infield single and scored four batters later after a Memphis error. Pinch-hitter Aubree Seaney coaxed a bases-loaded walk for an RBI and the rally was capped with run-scoring hits from Tori Stafford and Hollingsworth.
Threatt ended Delce's bid for another shutout with a two-out homer in the top of the seventh, but the Tigers could not get anything else going as Tulsa took the 5-1 win.
Game two of the series is scheduled to be played at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.
