TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa softball team rallied from an early 3-run deficit to defeat Memphis, 10-4, on Saturday in the second game of its American Athletic Conference series at Collins Family Softball Complex.
Sarah Briers drove in three runs, while Mikayla Whitten and Alexis Perry each drove in a pair for the Golden Hurricane (23-10, 4-1). Tulsa capitalized on errant pitching by the Tigers (18-16, 2-3), as TU totaled a season-high 10 walks.
Josie Muffley and Chenise Delce each recorded multi-hit games, while Samantha Pochop improved to 8-5 in the circle with 5.2 scoreless innings of relief.
On a cold and windy day, Memphis jumped ahead with three runs in the top of the first. Briers pushed across a run with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the frame, but Tulsa could not cut deeper into the Tigers' lead.
Memphis led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the second before the Hurricane scored six runs to take the lead for good. Tulsa took advantage of two hit batters and a pair of walks in the inning, scoring its six runs on just three hits.
Muffley punched a single through the left side before Morgan Neal walked with the bases loaded. Whitten was hit by a pitch with the bags still loaded to knot the score at 4-4. Briers then brought home another with a groundout and Alexis Perry capped the scoring with a two-RBI single up the middle.
That would be all the lead that Pochop needed. After she entered the game with one out in the second, the sophomore scattered three hits and recorded three strikeouts over her scoreless 5.2 innings.
The Tigers never advanced a runner past first base against her and TU offense continued to build on the lead with a three-run fifth inning.
Delce singled in a run before another bases-loaded walk to Whitten for a 9-4 cushion. Briers made it 10-4 after she was hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded.
From there, Pochop yielded just a one out single up the middle in the seventh, but picked up two more outs to lock down the victory and series win.
Tulsa will go for the series sweep at noon on Sunday.
