GREENVILLE, N.C. — The Tulsa softball team claimed its fourth straight American Athletic Conference series with a doubleheader sweep at ECU by scores of 8-1 and 5-1 on Friday afternoon.
With the victories, the Golden Hurricane improved to 28-13 overall and 9-2 in league play.
TU will look to secure its second conference series sweep when it faces the Pirates (19-23, 1-10) again at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday, April 14.
Game One
Rylie Spell's three-run homer capped a six-run third inning as Tulsa took game one of the three-game set with an 8-1 win over ECU.
Spell went 2-for-2 and she tied for the team-lead with her third home run of the spring. Meanwhile, Chenise Delce went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Julia Hollingsworth enjoyed a 3-for-5 outing with an RBI and two runs scored.
The trio helped lead the TU offense which backed an efficient start from Kassidy Scott in the circle. The junior needed just 70 pitches to improve to 7-3 after she gave up just one run on four hits with four strikeouts.
After two scoreless frames to start the game, TU took control with its six-run top of the third.
The first six batters of the inning reached base and Delce brought home the game's first runs with a two-run single to left-center. Mikayla Whitten brought home another run with a grounder before Spell blasted her three-run homer to left field for the 6-0 cushion.
The Pirates got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but TU picked up runs in the fourth and fifth to arrive at the final 8-1 margin.
Delce brought home Tulsa's run in the fourth with a hit, while Hollingsworth's RBI base knock an inning later provided the final run of the contest.
Game Two
Chenise Delce picked up her team-leading 12th victory in the circle, while Sarah Briers and Tori Stafford each drove in a pair of runs to help Tulsa sweep the doubleheader with 5-1 win over ECU in game two.
Mikayla Whitten also went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored for the Golden Hurricane. Delce had a hit and scored a run to go along with her six strong innings in which she allowed just one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
Tulsa jumped ahead with a run in the second as Stafford picked up the first of her two RBIs. The lead expanded to 3-0 an inning later when Briers ripped a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle.
ECU got its only run of the game in the fourth when Tate McClellan hit her 10th homer of the spring.
However, TU put the game away in the top of the fifth after run-scoring hits off the bat of Rylie Spell and Stafford made it 5-1.
Delce worked a scoreless sixth inning and gave way to Samantha Pochop, who needed just 12 pitches to record the final three outs and secure the win.
