Rapp Claims Hammer Throw Silver, School Record on First Day of American Outdoor Championships

WICHITA, Kan. — Aleks Rapp claimed conference silver in the men's hammer throw on Friday, launching a school record 61.24-meter (200-11 feet) mark for eight team points on day one of the American Outdoor Championships at Cessna Stadium.
After the first day in Wichita, both the Tulsa men and women sit in third-place overall with 21 and 14 team points, respectively.
On Rapp's final toss of the event, the Canada native launched TU's first 200-foot throw in school history to secure his second-place finish, shattering Alex Lybarger's 197-3 foot distance set in 2015.
The Tulsa duo of Isaac Akers and Peter Lynch added a lofty 11 points in the men's 10,000 meters. Akers ran arguably his best race in a TU uniform, taking third in 30:31.30, while Lynch was right behind for fourth in 30:37.92.
The TU women added ten points in the women's 10,000 meters in the form of Caitlin Klopfer and Jenny O'Bryan. Klopfer ran the second-fastest time in her career in 34:40.25 for bronze and the fourth-fastest mark in school history. In a race that saw three women break the stadium record, O'Bryan also notched a fifth-place finish in 35:26.27 to add four team points.
Ali Lund picked up the No. 2 TU all-time mark, tossing a PR on her first attempt in the women's javelin. Lund tallied TU four points and fifth overall with her mark of 45.81 meters (150-3 feet) for the best Golden Hurricane throw since 2006.
The historic field event success continued late into day one, as freshman Ryan Still notched a lofty PR throw of 57.47m (188-6 feet) to secure the No. 3 mark in TU all-time. In addition, Still's seventh place overall earned Tulsa three points in the team scoring.
In the women's 800 meters prelims, senior Sabrina Monsees earned a spot in Sunday's finals with a 2:12.37 in the third heat. The time marks her fastest in the event this season.
The Golden Hurricane men followed suit, sending two through to Sunday's 800-meter finals. Robert Tully (1:52.02Q) and Grey Howard (1:52.39Q) each took second in their respective heats to earn automatic qualifiers.
Finally in the 400-meter hurdles, both sophomore Henry Visser (52.57q) and freshman Emmanuel Okwuone (54.55q) booked their spots in the finals, qualifying on time from the first heat.
Head coach Steve Gulley's squad will resume action tomorrow, May 11, at 3 p.m. CT, as Carsyn Spurgeon hunts her first conference title in the women's long jump.
