SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Carsyn Spurgeon led the Golden Hurricane as TU's highest finisher with a 13th-place showing in the long jump, as the Tulsa track and field squad completed day one of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds late Thursday night.
Spurgeon leapt 6.08 meters (19-11.50 feet), missing out on qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, by one spot, which translated to less than an inch. Despite not qualifying, Spurgeon made the most of her sophomore season, shattering both her personal and the TU school records this year in the event.
Aleks Rapp kicked off the first day for Tulsa in the men's hammer throw, launching a toss of 55.66 meters (182-7 feet) for his second-best mark of the season.
Senior Bailey Stewart also ran well in the men's 400 meters. The New Zealand native capped off a strong sprint career in Green Country with a 47.11 for 27th overall, which earns Stewart the No. 6 time in school history.
In Tulsa's two entries in the men's 800-meter run, both Robert Tully and Grey Howard ran a similar 1:50, as Tully finished 27th in 1:50.29 and Howard 31st in 1:50.67, but neither were able to punch their tickets to Texas.
The Golden Hurricane's final two showings on day one in Sacramento came in the form of Caitlin Klopfer and Ben Preisner in the 10,000 meters. Preisner would run 29:22.14 for 17th and the No. 9 time in TU all-time, while Klopfer would go 35:12.37 for the eighth-fastest mark in school records and 37th overall.
Head coach Steve Gulley will have two more chances for qualification on Friday in the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, as both Alyssa Bolliger and Katharina Pesendorfer will compete in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Both athletes qualified for the NCAA West Prelims at the American Outdoor Championships, where Pesendorfer broke teammate Ashley Barnes' school record with her time of 10:22.27 in the race.
