Tulsa’s Thomas Bennett Named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List

AUGUSTA, Ga. –– The University of Tulsa senior punter Thomas Bennett was named one of 26 candidates for the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list, as announced today by the August Sports Council.
Bennett (6'3", 182) was the nation's 5th-ranked punter last season with an average of 46.6 yards on 53 punts. It was the first time since 1975 that a Golden Hurricane punter averaged 46.0 yards or better and is the second-highest in school history, behind Glenn Dobbs' nation-leading 48.3 average in 1942.
A two-year starter, Bennett earned second-team all-American Athletic Conference honors in 2018.
A Carlsbad, California native, Bennett has handled Tulsa's punting duties in his two seasons. He has a 44.3 career punting average, has placed 28 punts inside the 20-yard line and 26 punts have traveled 50 yards or more for his career.
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. The 2019 watch list was compiled based on the 2018 Ray Guy Award Semifinalist List, the top ten NCAA Punters from 2018, the 2018 All-Conference teams, the 2018 All-American Teams and the 2019 pre-season All-Conference Teams.
Tulsa opens the season on Friday night, August 30 at Michigan State. The Hurricane opens the home season two weeks later on Saturday, Sept. 14, against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff from H.A. Chapman Stadium.
