Celebrating 150 Years of College Football
In honor of College Football celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019, TulsaHurricane.com will recognize some of the most memorable moments and exciting plays in the history of The University of Tulsa football each week throughout the season.

Tulsa is in its 120th season of fielding a football team. The Tulsa gridiron tradition started as Henry Kendall College in 1895 with the first team posting a 1-0-0 record lead by coach Norman Leard. There were a few seasons in the early years that Kendall College did not field a team, but later becoming The University of Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane football teams have amassed 600+ wins in school history.

This 150th College Football Anniversary moment we take a HISTORICAL LOOK this week at an NCAA record that still stands today.

Ashlan Davis Sets NCAA Record
In the 2004 season, Tulsa receiver and kick returner Ashlan Davis established an NCAA FBS record for most touchdowns on kickoff returns in a single season with five. Four of those five returns came in consecutive games for another NCAA/FBS record.

It wasn't until Game 6 that Davis had his first kick return for a touchdown, covering 100 yards against No. 18 Boise State. In each of the next three games, Davis also scored on kick returns. He went 94 yards vs. Nevada the next week, 83 yards vs. Rice in Game 8, and 96 yards vs. SMU in Game 9. In the season finale, a 37-35 Tulsa win over #24 UTEP, Davis took a kickoff early in the 2nd quarter for a 74-yard touchdown.

Before that season, the previous record for most touchdowns scored on kickoff returns was three, set by seven players, the first of which came in 1946. Both of Davis' NCAA records from the 2004 season still stand today.
