TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa men's basketball team began fall practices in preparation for the 109th season of Golden Hurricane basketball on Monday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Head coach Frank Haith, who is in his sixth season at TU, welcomes back six letterwinners and a pair of starters from last year's team, which won 18 games. The Golden Hurricane is led by senior forward Martins Igbanu, who averaged career highs of 12.5 points and a team-leading 5.7 rebounds per game a season ago.
The Hurricane will be tasked with replacing its leading scorer and third-team all-conference honoree DaQuan Jeffries. Jeffries will begin training camp with the Orlando Magic this week. In addition, the squad will be without its point guard from the 2018-19 team after Sterling Taplin graduated alongside Jeffries last spring.
Despite the losses, the Golden Hurricane return one of the most experienced rosters in the country with nine upperclassmen. That group is led by Igbanu and fellow senior Lawson Korita in addition to juniors Brandon Rachal, Elijah Joiner, Darien Jackson, Emmanuel Ugboh, Reggie Jones, Jeriah Horne and Curtis Haywood II. Horne is the team's top returning threat from behind the arc after he hit 49 treys last season.
The Golden Hurricane will continue practices leading up to its Oct. 31 exhibition game against Rockhurst (7 p.m.) at the Reynolds Center. The regular season will open at 12 p.m. on Tue., Nov. 5 when TU hosts Houston Baptist in the third annual Blackboards & Backboards Educational Day Game.
Season tickets for the 17-game home schedule are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased by calling 918-631-GoTU (4688).
