SAN JOSE, Calif. — Tulsa racked up 539 yards of offense (283 passing/256 rushing), including 140 yards rushing and a touchdown from Shamari Brooks, to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 34-16 win at San Jose State on Saturday night at CEFCU Stadium.

Brooks neared career highs with his 29 carries and 140 yards for the Golden Hurricane (1-1), while TK Wilkerson had a career-best 15 rushes on his way to 92 yards and the first two touchdowns in a Tulsa uniform. It was the ninth 100-yard game of Brooks' career.

Quarterback Zach Smith had an efficient game, completing 21 of his 28 passes for 283 yards and a score. Smith's top target on the night was Sam Crawford Jr., who had career highs of 137 yards on nine receptions. Denzel Carter added 45 yards on two catches, including an 8-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.

Defensively, the Hurricane put together another strong outing as it forced the Spartans (1-1) into four-consecutive punts to start the second half while the offense built up a 34-10 advantage.

The TU defense was led by Cooper Edmiston's 11 tackles and Trevis Gipson had four stops, including a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Bryson Powers forced a fumble late in the game that was recovered by Tyon Davis.

For San Jose State, Josh Love threw for 189 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-30 passing. Nick Nash came on late to throw for 44 yards, while he also scrambled for 48 yards and a score.

The Tulsa offense rolled to 260 yards of offense in the opening half, led by a 137-yard effort on the ground. Brooks ran for 80 yards on 24 attempts with a score, while TK Wilkerson added 27 yards to help lead the charge.

The Hurricane scored on each of its first two possessions, which combined to eat up more than 11 minutes of the first half.

TU took the opening kickoff and ran 11 consecutive plays before Smith completed his first pass, a 21-yarder to Keylon Stokes, to enter the red zone. Brooks capped the 14-play, 75-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown, his first of the campaign.

Tulsa's second scoring drive came after the Spartans kicked a field goal to pull within 7-3.

TU again did most of its damage on the ground, but the drive was highlighted by two big pass plays. Smith found Sam Crawford Jr. for a 37-yard catch and run before an 8-yard touchdown pass to Denzel Carter in the back corner of the end zone for a 14-3 advantage.

The Hurricane answered a Spartans touchdown with a field goal drive to take a 17-10 advantage into halftime. The TU defense held San Jose State to 168 yards of offense and just 16 yards on 13 rushing attempts.

The Tulsa defense forced 4-straight punts to start the 2nd half, while on Tulsa's second possession after intermission the Hurricane went 70 yards in 12 plays and got as close as the San Jose State 7-yard line. However, Tulsa had to settle for a second Jacob Rainey field goal for the only score of the third quarter.

Rainey's 28-yarder put the Hurricane ahead 20-10 with less than 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Wilkerson had TD runs of 3 and 17 yards on subsequent 4^th quarter Tulsa possessions for a 34-10 lead near the 10-minute mark.

The Spartans used a 16-play, 74-yard drive that took 7:26 off the clock to add to its score. Tulsa held on the 2-point attempt, but the Spartans recovered the onside kick attempt. Tulsa's defense ended any possibility of San Jose State adding to the score when Bryson Powers forced a fumble that was recovered by Tyon Davis.

Tulsa closed out the final 1:32 to claim its first win of the season and its first road victory since late in the 2016 season.

Tulsa will make its home debut at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 when it will host Oklahoma State (2-0) in the Bank of Oklahoma Turnpike Classic at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
