Tulsa dropped a 63-35 decision to #21 USF on Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Hurricane fell to 1-3 on the season and 0-3 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bulls moved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the league.
Madi Washington and Wyvette Mayberry both had a team-leading nine points, while Rebecca Lescay and Maddie Bittle both added four. Desiree Lewis pulled down a team-best eight rebounds and Wyvette Mayberry had two steals.
Tulsa shot just 19-percent from the field, 25-percent from behind the arc and 50-percent from the field, while USF was 38-percent from the field, 31-percent from three-point range and 55-percent from the line in the contest.
"I thought we defended really well, even though they outrebounded us by 11, we hung in there regardless of our lack of size," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We were solid, we made adjustments, we made USF work for shots and held them to a low percentage, but we couldn't make a basket at our end. We played a lot of new kids and everyone has to get comfortable. The brightest spot was Madi Washington going 3-for-5 from three. It was good to see her get on track."
USF had a 51-40 lead in rebounds, a 12-6 advantage in assists and a 5-2 edge in blocks, while Tulsa had a 6-4 lead in steals.
USF started the game with a 7-0 run, but a three-pointer by Madi Washington at the 4:56 mark snapped the Golden Hurricane's scoreless streak. It was also Washington's first points in a TU uniform.
Washington hit another three, and then Sommer Blakemore picked up her first point at Tulsa on a free throw made with 32 seconds to play in the first quarter. The Bulls owned a 13-7 advantage at the end of the frame.
Throughout the second quarter, USF inched ahead to a first half best 11-point lead to go into the locker room up 24-13. Tulsa ended the first half on a 3:47 scoring drought and hit just one of their last 12 attempts.
TU shot a dismal 13-percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, including 18-percent from behind the arc, and was 3-of-6 from the free throw line, while USF shot 29-percent from the field, 22-percent from three-point range and 44-percent (4-of-9) from the line.
Tulsa came out of the locker room shooting 57-percent (4-of-7) in the first five minutes of the third quarter and ended the frame shooting 41-percent, but the Bulls shot a solid 47-percent from the field and owned a 43-26 advantage with one quarter to play.
The Bulls outscored the Hurricane, 20-9, in the final frame and climbed to a game-best 28-point lead for the final score.
USF was led by Elisa Pinzan with 13 points, while Bethy Mununga added 11 and Sydni Harvey scored 10. Shae Leverett had a team-best eight rebounds, Pinzan had four assists and two steals, and Cristina Bermejo had two blocks.
