Destiny Johnson scored a career-high 15 points, while Addison Richards also posted 15, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 62-49 decision to UCF on Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Hurricane fell to 6-17 on the season and 1-9 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Knights moved to 13-8 overall and 5-4 in the league.
KK Rodriguez added nine points and team-bests of six rebounds and four steals.
"I was proud of our guys," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "KK gets rebounds, steals and played point guard, and Destiny was a huge shot in the arm for us too. We've struggled to find people that can score, so if we can get more players with good percentages we can win some games. Our players haven't quit and are very determined, so there is plenty to be encouraged about."
Tulsa shot a solid 45.7-percent, their second best shooting game of the season, but the Knights shot an even better 48-percent from the field. The biggest discrepancy came at the free throw line as TU was 6-of-9 from the free throw line while UCF was 14-of-22.
"We had to play too many minutes with Kendrian Elliott not on the floor," Mossman said. "She fouled out and only played 15 minutes. Addison was one of our leading scorers today and she spent most of the first half on the bench. It is very frustrating when you are watching the other team shoot 22 free throws and you only shoot nine."
UCF had a 37-19 lead in rebounds, but TU owned a 13-7 lead in assists, a 13-9 advantage in steals and a 2-1 edge in blocks.
UCF jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the 7:28 mark and climbed to a 12-4 advantage with 3:08 in the first frame. Tulsa outscored the Knights, 4-1, to close out the period down 13-8.
UCF started the second quarter with a 14-2 run to take a 27-10 advantage with 5:14 to play in the frame, but the Golden Hurricane battled back with a 10-2 run of their own to pull within nine, 29-20, at the 2:26 mark. The Knights owned a 30-20 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, UCF had a narrow 15-13 scoring advantage for a 45-33 lead with one frame to play, and then outscored Tulsa by one, 17-16, in the final period for the 13-point victory.
The Knights were led by Kay Kay Wright with 20 points, while Sianni Martin added 17 and Brittney Smith posted 12. Martin had a team-best nine rebounds, while Wright had three steals.
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, February 12 at Cincinnati. Game time is set for 11:00 am in Cincinnati, Ohio.
