TULSA, Okla. –– University of Tulsa cornerback Reggie Robinson II was selected by the Dallas Cowboys Saturday with the 17th pick in the 4th round of the NFL Draft, No. 123 overall. Robinson returns to the DFW area, as he attended Cleburne High School, nearly 50 miles southwest of Dallas.
The 6'1", 197-pound senior was the top defensive back in the American Athletic Conference in 2019. He was the league leader for passes defended with 17, including a conference-leading 13 pass break-ups, and ranked second for interceptions with four.
Robinson is Tulsa's first NFL draft choice since the 2011 season when tight end Charles Clay went in the 6th round (No.174) to the Miami Dolphins. He is the highest Tulsa draft pick since tight end Garrett Mills was a 4th round (No. 106) selection by the New England Patriots. He is the first Tulsa player picked by Dallas since Barry Minter was a Cowboys' 6th round pick in 1993.
"If there was a most improved player at the cornerback position in college football this year it was Reggie Robinson," said ESPN college football analyst Mel Kiper, Jr., on today's ESPN coverage of the draft.
In his career, Robinson tallied 132 stops, 34 pass break-ups and had four blocked kicks in 45 career games played with 34 starts.
As a senior, Robinson totaled 38 tackles, ranked 6th in the AAC for fumbles recovered with 2 and had one blocked kick. Robinson was named The American's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against UCF when he totaled five tackles, all solos, three pass break-ups and one interception that led to Tulsa's game-winning field goal.
In the Wyoming game, Robinson blocked a field goal and recovered a fumble late in the game that gave Tulsa the victory. He had his first career multiple interception game with 2 pick-offs at Tulane and totaled a career-high 12 against #25 Memphis. In the season finale against ECU, Robinson collected a career-best 4 pass break-ups and had a 31-yard fumble recovery.
As a junior, Robinson played in only eight games due to injury and totaled 19 tackles and five pass break-ups. He had 38 tackles and a team-high nine pass break-ups his sophomore season.
Robinson played in the Senior Bowl and was invited to the NFL Combine following the 2019 season.
