Tulsa Football Preview: Cornerbacks

Despite losing Dallas Cowboys' 4th round draft choice Reggie Robinson II, Tulsa's cornerback position returns 31 starts to the position. Those starts come from 6'3" Allie Green IV (6-3, 206) and 6'2" Akayleb Evans (6-2, 188). The pair have combined to tally 141 tackles and 18 pass break-ups in their careers.
"We have good length, speed, athleticism and physicality across the board in our secondary," said Montgomery. "At corner, I feel like we have two all-conference players there. AG and Akayleb have been starters here during their first three years. They have great length, experience and they've been under fire before. They know how to handle and play the position."
A senior, Green started 11 games last year and recorded 45 stops and four pass break-ups, while totaling 88 career tackles and 10 break-ups. Evans started the first three games in 2019 but suffered a season-ending injury in the third contest and received a redshirt season. He has 53 career stops and eight pass break-ups, while turning in starting assignments in each of his first three seasons.
"Allie has been a starter for multiple years. He has great cover skills, he's long and strong and very physical. He does a great job of eating guys up at the line of scrimmage," said Montgomery. "Akayleb has battled some injuries but has also started a number of games for us. Physically he looks as good as we've ever seen him coming into this season."
The cornerback slot also returns one junior, sophomore and red-shirt freshman, all three who saw some playing time a year ago.
"We have some young guys that got some experience last year who have really come on this camp with Ryan, Tyon and Reggie. We feel confident of throwing them into the game and being able to play at a high level. They continue to grow and get better. We're trying to push them and throw them a bunch of different looks and give them opportunities to gain knowledge," added Montgomery.
Tyon Davis (6-0, 185), who transferred to Tulsa from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, prior to 2019 saw valuable playing time at corner last year, tallying nine stops and two pass break-ups in 11 games. Ryan Nixon (6-2, 1984), a transfer from El Camino Community College, was able to redshirt last season but still managed five tackles in four games, while redshirt freshman Reggie Ellis (6-0, 190) played in two games in 2019.
Two rookies Kaylon Washington (6-2, 175) and DaMarco Williams (6-4, 190) add great size and athleticism.
