Tulsa Drops 75-49 Decision at Houston

GAME BOOK | SEASON STATS

Wyvette Mayberry and Maya Mayberry both scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 75-49 decision to Houston on Wednesday afternoon at the Fertitta Center in Houston, Texas.  The Golden Hurricane fell to 3-4 on the season and 2-4 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Cougars moved to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the league.

"I thought when we cut it to seven, I felt like we had the momentum, but Houston did a great job of taking that momentum away from us," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said.  "Credit Houston's ability to take us off the dribble, and we couldn't do anything to stop their dribble drive."

Wyvette Mayberry scored 15 points, while Maya Mayberry added 11, and both Rebecca Lescay and Desiree Lewis posted six points.

Houston had a 50-29 advantage in rebounds, but just a 5-2 advantage in second chance points.  The Cougars also had a 36-10 lead in points in the paint, a 16-9 advantage in points off turnovers and a 19-9 lead in points off the bench.

The Golden Hurricane struggled to shoot the ball in the final quarter missing all 16 shot attempts, but a pair of free throws made by Maya Mayberry and KK Rodriguez gave TU four points in the quarter, while the Cougars totaled 23.

"Credit Houston and their ability to defend us, take us out of our offense and making us take rushed shots," Mossman said.  "Once we got within seven, Houston just put themselves into another gear and that took us out of everything we wanted to do."

The Cougars jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the 7:52 mark, but a three-pointer by Maya Mayberry with 6:08 on the clock snapped TU's scoring drought.  UH owned a 23-13 advantage at the end of the frame, but both teams shot a good percentage with TU hitting 41.7-percent from the field and 50-percent from behind the arc, and UH shooting 55.6-percent from the field and 42.9-percent from three-point range.

Houston climbed to a game-high 19-point lead (34-15) with 5:01 to play in the second quarter, but TU went on a 12-5 run to close out the half down by 12 (39-27).

Tulsa outscored Houston, 18-13, in the third quarter to pull to within seven at the end of the frame (52-45), including eight points from Wyvette Mayberry and six points from Desiree Lewis.

Houston had two players with double-doubles, including Julia Blackshell-Fair with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Jazmaine Lewis with 10 points and 10 boards.  Dymond Gladney also added 14 points.

Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, January 16 against Tulane.  Game time is set for 1:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
