Tulsa No. 2 ranked and No. 6 seeded men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 11 seed West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament Third Round on Saturday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane concluded their season with a 16-2-1 overall record, while West Virginia moved to 11-3-5 on the season.
Â
Tulsa's 16 wins ties the program best set during the 2008 season. This was the fourth time TU has played in the NCAA Tournament Third Round, with a record of 2-2 in the game, while owning a 10-11-2 overall record in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
"I said it before, this group set a new standard in terms of their performance, concentration and training and as a result, they tied the most wins in program history, they took home two trophies and did everything we could have asked," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "Obviously I'm disappointed, not in them but for them. I appreciate everything this group has put into the season. It is a tough way to end.  I thought in the last 30 minutes or so we were really going for it, but West Virginia held strong and defended well. It was an unfortunate scenario on the corner kick where we missed a clearance but those things happen, it is just an unfortunate way to lose and end our season."
Â
The two teams battled for all 90 minutes of regulation and the first 10 minute overtime period, but with just 1:16 into the second overtime period Otto Ollikainen finished a corner kick that was placed into the box that ended the game in the 102nd minute.
Â
West Virginia had a 10-8 lead in shots, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Â
Chase Bromstedt and Malik Henry-Scott both had a team-best two shots, while four others had one attempt. Alex Lopez logged all 101:16 in goal and picked up four saves.
