TULSA, Okla. – Chenise Delce was lights out from the circle and the plate, leading the Golden Hurricane to a 5-1 victory over the No. 22-ranked UCF Knights Thursday night at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Delce (3-3) drew the start in the circle throwing 6.0 innings, keeping the Knights high-powered offense to just three hits and no runs. The sophomore ended her day striking out 2 batters, while surrendering just 3 walks.
"It's outstanding to get a win on our home field, especially in our first conference series against a top-25 opponent," said head coach Crissy Strimple, "We needed to come out and play hard from the get-go. I thought the girls came out and swung the bats well. We had our foot on the gas the entire game."
The Hurricane hitting shined in the game, recording 8 hits and scoring 5 runs against Knights pitcher Alea White who came into the contest with a 13-1 record.
Haley Morgan started things off for TU in the third inning, doubling to right field. Alexis Perry followed in up by hitting a rocket to second back, putting runners on first and second.
An error by the Knights second basemen loaded the bases with one out for Tulsa. Sarah Briers sent a shot back up the middle which beamed off White before resulting in a ground out; however, Morgan and pinch runner Gracie Jarvis both scored on the play.
Delce returned to the circle using the 2 run lead to boost her confidence. She retired the next 9-of-11 batters allowing 1 hit and a walk over 3 innings.
"Chenise, after taking a weekend off for a minor injury, was back feeling good. It was awesome to see her take the circle and control the game," said Strimple, "She shut out an offense that was not used to being shut out and is one of the best in our conference."
Tulsa added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth as Imani Edwards started the inning with a single to the short stop. Delce walked and Makayla Jackson reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Kylie Norwood.
Norwood singled to center field scoring Edwards from third. TU did not end there as Morgan doubled down the left field line scoring both Delce and pinch runner Kyndal Pirtle.
Kassidy Scott came in the seventh inning to relieve Delce. The senior struck out the first two batters before allowing consecutive hits and the Knights' lone run. However, Scott emphatically struck out the last batter to give Tulsa the 5-1 victory.
The Hurricane and Knights are back in action tomorrow, April 2, in a double-header which begins at 3:00 p.m. at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
