PRACTICE 1: Tulsa Football Opens Preseason Drills

TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football was on the grass of Harwell Field for two hours this morning for the first day of preseason camp.

"I was really pleased with practice today. Our intensity was really good and our energy was really good," said Head Coach Philip Montgomery.

"We obviously still had to brush off the rust being the first day, but as far as the energy level and enthusiasm I was very pleased. It was good to see our guys back out moving. They did a really good job of changing directions, cutting and breaking," added Montgomery.

Montgomery indicated that installation will move quicker this preseason.

"We'll put our installation in a lot faster than we normally do," said Montgomery. "We have an older team so we have an opportunity to build on that. In addition to being older, some of the changes that have occurred to the preseason schedule we're just trying to get more things in a little quicker. We just have two scrimmages this year so we want to make sure we get the majority of that install done before the second scrimmage, then we can really start focusing on our first opponent, UC Davis."

Tulsa will be back on the practice field Thursday morning.

HURRICANE NOTES …
RUNNING BACK EDITION… NJCAA All-America running back Jordan Ford (5-10, 188) was a late signee from Garden City Community College, joining the Hurricane July 22 … rushed for nation-leading 1,039 yards and 12 TDs on 179 attempts without a fumble in 2020 … averaged 5.8 yards per carry and posted five 100-yard rushing games his sophomore season … tallied a career-best 222 yards vs. Butler CC in the 2020 regular season finale.

COACHING TITLE CHANGES… Going into the 2021 season, there have been coaching title changes for three TU coaches … Carlton Buckels, who has served as safeties coach for his first three seasons on staff, is now the defensive passing game coordinator and cornerbacks coach … on offense, receivers coach Calvin Lowry and quarterbacks coach Beau Trahan will also share the responsibilities of co-passing game coordinator.

AAC ANNOUNCES PRESEASON POLL… The American Athletic Conference's preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches, was announced today… defending conference regular season co-champion Tulsa was picked 6^th in the 11-team league … AAC Champion Cincinnati was the preseason favorite, followed by UCF, SMU, Houston and Memphis … last year, after a preseason ranking of 9^th Tulsa finished with a perfect 6-0 league record to tie Cincinnati for the regular season title and face the Bearcats in the championship game.

TULSA FOOTBALL ANNOUNCES NEW VIDEO DIRECTOR… Katie Newton is the new director of football video for the Golden Hurricane … Newton comes to Tulsa after a half season at the University of Louisiana-Monroe … previously she was a graduate intern for football video at Clemson and before that was a graduate assistant of football video at Memphis. … she earned her bachelor's degree from Arkansas in 2019.
