Columbia, Mo. –– The No. 6 University of Tulsa men's cross-country team captured its second regional title in school history as the Golden Hurricane beat Oklahoma State in a tiebreaker to win the NCAA Midwest Regional at Gans Creek Cross Country Course on Friday afternoon.
The win also guaranteed Tulsa will race in the NCAA Championship next Saturday in Stillwater, Okla., as TU and OSU earned the two automatic qualifier bids. Tulsa's women placed seventh in the Midwest Regional, but redshirt sophomore Chloe Hershenow qualified individually for the NCAA Championship with a fourth-place performance.
"We are super stoked," men's coach Taylor Gulley said. "It's the meet you have to run to qualify for the national championships, but it is still super important. I think the best team's we have had at NCAAs have typically run well at regionals, and we executed well today.
"We've been talking about developing the backend of our lineup and I thought Luke Lambert and Max Nores had their best races of the season. Our front four is at a completely different level right now. We carry a lot of momentum and excitement into next week in Stillwater."
The Hurricane men finished three, four, five, six and 31st for its scorers. Tulsa's one through four runners all finished within a second of each other. Shay McEvoy, who didn't run in The American Championships, returned to lead the men with a time of 29:42.0 in the 10k race. Cormac Dalton, Isaac Akers and Micheal Power were right behind him, with Power taking sixth in 29:42.8. All four runners earned all-region honors.
"Nothing those guys do surprises me anymore," Gulley said. "I don't put anything past them. Those four guys can run with anyone in the country, and they showed that today."
Luke Lambert, The American's Freshman of the Year, placed 31st with a time of 30:12.9, while Max Nores was Tulsa's final runner, taking 40th in 30:24.8.
No. 4 Oklahoma State and Tulsa were neck and neck down the final stretch and finished with 49 team points each. The tiebreaker went to head-to-head among the top five. Oklahoma State's Isai Rodriguez won the individual title, giving OSU the edge in first finishers for each team. But Tulsa held the advantage in second, third and fourth finishers, handing the Hurricane the team title.
In the women's 6k, Hershenow followed her American Athletic Conference individual title with a stellar performance on Friday. She raced with the top group from start to finish, pacing the Hurricane women with a fourth-place finish in 20:12.4.
The winner of the race, Illinois' Olivia Howell, pulled away from the pack in the final 1k, but Hershenow was in a competitive race for second and third, finishing less than a second behind two Oklahoma State runners.
"Outstanding," Coach Steve Gulley said. "Really, I was shocked. It's a great competition and she finished fourth and qualified individually for the national championship. It's a huge step up. I'm really proud of her and pleased with the confidence that she's developing."
In addition to her automatic spot in the title race, Hersehnow earned All-Midwest Region honors for her performance.
Four Tulsa women placed in the top 50 with Sara Scott (34th), Layla Roebke (36th) and Katharina Pesendorfer (46th) joining Hershenow. Chloe McEachern (62nd) and Robyn Kowalski (89th) placed in the top 100, and Keely Jones finished 123rd in a field of more than 230 runners.
"I thought the women ran well," Steve Gulley said. "We were ranked seventh coming in and finished seventh. A little disappointed because I think with a good race, we were probably fourth. But that's the difference, other people ran a better race. We need to be a little tougher in stressful situations."
