Stillwater, Okla. –– The fifth-ranked University of Tulsa men's cross-country team will compete at the NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships on Saturday morning, marking the fifth-straight season the men will compete at the event. Chloe Hershenow earned an individual invite and will represent the Golden Hurricane women.
Â
The Hurricane is no stranger to the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course. This season alone, Tulsa has competed twice on the course with the Cowboy Preview and Cowboy Jamboree. This will be the first time at the 10k length for the men. Â
Â
Hershenow and the women's 6k championship race will start at 9:20 a.m., and the Golden Hurricane men will begin the 10k championship at 10:10. The race will air on ESPNU starting at 9 a.m.
Â
A strong finish to end the season earned Hershenow an opportunity to race on Saturday. After winning the individual title in the conference championship, she followed with a fantastic performance at the Midwest Regional, finishing fourth. She was the top individual finisher for a team who didn't automatically qualify booking her place in the NCAA Championships.
Â
The men are making their 13th NCAA Championships appearance in 16 years. Tulsa enters after winning the Midwest Regional for the second time in school history. The Hurricane captured its 13th consecutive conference championship this season, as well as strong showings at the Cowboy Jamboree and Nuttycombe Invitational.
Â
In all, 31 teams will compete for the top prize in the sport. Tulsa's men earned the right to compete with a thrilling win at the Midwest Regional. The Hurricane and fourth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys finished neck and neck at 49 points, but because Tulsa runners finished third through sixth, TU won the tiebreaker and the regional.
Â
Stanford holds the top spot headed into the final race with two-time defending champion Northern Arizona in second. BYU, Oklahoma State and Tulsa round out the top five.
Â
The men finished sixth at last season's championship, which tied the previous season's performance for second best in school history. Cormac Dalton paced Tulsa a season ago, earning All-America status with a 34th-placed finish. Also returning to run in the championship are Isaac Akers, Shay McEvoy and Micheal Power.
Â
Akers, Dalton and Power were the top three finishers at the conference championships, as McEvoy rested. In the regional, it was McEvoy who led the way as the other three finished within less than a second of him. All four earned all-region honors.
