Tulsa's sixth-ranked men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to 16th-ranked SMU in the regular season finale on Wednesday night at the Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The Golden Hurricane fell to 9-3-2 on the season and 5-3-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs moved to 10-4-1 overall and a 6-3 in the league.
TU finished fourth in the league during the regular season and will host fifth-seed Memphis in the American Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinals on Sunday, November 6th beginning at 6:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
"We can't come out and concede goals like we did," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "We have to start the game better than we did. I thought the response to the hole that we put ourselves in was excellent in the second half, but we have to learn and not put ourselves in this position."
How it Happened
Knut Ahlander punched in a penalty kick with just 16:11 ticked off the clock to give SMU an early 1-0 lead, but Alex Meinhard evened the score just over two minutes later as he shot from 20 yards out on a forward pass from Malik Henry-Scott.
Ahlander put the Mustangs up once again in the 37th minute before Fredrik Skilberg made it 3-1 in the 40th minute and SMU took that advantage into the break.
Meinhard got one back for TU as he scored on a penalty kick at the 49:52 mark, but the Golden Hurricane couldn't get the equalizer to fall 3-2.
