Tulsa men's soccer players Mariano Fazio and Alex Meinhard are two of just 44 players invited to participate in the 2022 adidas MLS College Showcase, which takes place from Dec. 9-12 in conjunction with the 2022 NCAA Men's College Cup in Raleigh, N.C.
Fazio, a senior from Sevilla, Spain, helped anchor the Tulsa defense, which allowed just 18 goals and recorded eight clean sheets for a 1.03 goals-against average, all of which were the best in the league. He also recorded two goals and one assist for five points. For his efforts this season he was named to the 2022 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's All-East Region first teams, was tabbed as the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and picked up all-conference first-team accolades. He also was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week, as The American Defensive Player of the Week, the TDS No. 6 National Player, was a United Soccer Coaches Defender to Watch and was tabbed to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
A junior forward from Tartu, Estonia, Meinhard had team-bests of 10 goals, five assists and 25 points this season. He attempted 38 shots, 22 of which were on goal, for a 57.9 shots-on-goal percentage. He ranked second in points, third in goals, ninth in shots and 10th in assists in The American final rankings and picked up all-conference first-team honors. He also was named to the 2022 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's All-East Region first team. Meinhard was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week twice, was selected as the TDS No. 2 National Player in the midseason rankings, was a United Soccer Coaches Player to Watch and was tabbed to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
The four-day event gives technical staffs from every MLS club an opportunity to scout top collegiate prospects in the nation, including players with remaining NCAA eligibility.
The 2022 adidas MLS College Showcase features 44 top college players, ranging from freshmen to graduate students, participating in a series of training sessions, testing, interviews and match play. This event will allow MLS clubs to scout and interact with potential MLS SuperDraft selections across different stages of their collegiate careers without jeopardizing players' collegiate eligibility.
