Tulsa enters Wednesday's contest with a 9-16 record, 3-11 in the American Athletic Conference. SMU brings a 19-6, 10-3 AAC record into the game, the second best in the conference behind Houston. The Mustangs suffered a setback last week at Temple, but responded with a convincing 73-57 win on Sunday against a Memphis squad who has been playing its best basketball of the season
Wednesday marks the 57th meeting between the Hurricane and the Mustangs in a series
Tulsa leads 33-23 overall and 19-9 in road games. The teams met earlier in the season, also on a Wednesday, to start the conference season. Tulsa battled back from a 19-point halftime deficit to get within three with three minutes to play but couldn't convert down the stretch. SMU buried a couple of late free throws and escaped Tulsa with the 74-69 win.
The Hurricane earned its first road win of the season on Saturday, completing the season sweep of South Florida in a 65-57 win in Tampa, Fla. Sam Griffin bounced back from a couple of low-scoring performances to record 23 points on 67 percent shooting. Rey Idowu added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Tulsa led by five at the break and started the second half on a 6-0 run to go up double digits. The Hurricane held South Florida at an arm's length the entirety of the second half, never allowing the lead to drop below six.
Jeriah Horne paces Tulsa this season with a 15.8 scoring average. He also pulls down a team-high 6.8 rebounds a night. Sophomore guard Griffin is next in scoring, averaging 15.4 per game. Graduate seneior Darien Jackson scores at a 9.3 clip and has averaged 14.3 points per game over the past four contests. Freshman Anthony Pritchard dishes out a team-high 3.2 assists per game and has contributed more than 25 percent of the team's total assists on the season.
SMU is led by star guard Kendric Davis, who is one of the top scorers in the nation, averaging 19.4 a game to lead the conference. Davis also gets to the foul line more often than anyone else in the conference. Marcus Weathers (12.6), Emmanuel Bandoumel (10.5) and Michael Weathers (10.0) each also average at least 10 points per game.
After Wednesday's matchup, Tulsa will finish the road portion of its season at East Carolina on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
