Golden Hurricane Falls at SMU

DALLAS, Texas –– The University of Tulsa was on the wrong side of a 24-3 second half run in a 75-61 loss to SMU at Moody Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
The Golden Hurricane fell to 9-17 and 3-12 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Mustangs improved to 20-6, 11-3 AAC.
Tulsa started the second half trailing 30-27 and the teams immediately traded 3-pointers with SMU hitting first before Jeriah Horne knocked down his own attempt. Rey Idowu hit a hook shot in the lane and Tulsa was down one, 33-32 with 18:20 to play.
The Mustangs proceeded to go on their 24-3 run over the next 7:25 to take control of the game 57-35 with 10:55 left. The run included five of SMU's seven second half 3-pointers.
Tulsa outscored SMU 8-2 to cut the lead to 59-43 with 8:13 to play, but the Mustangs pushed the lead back to 20. The lead would hover around 20 before Tulsa got the lead below 15, 66-52, with 4:35 remaining with a pair of Horne free throws. However, Tulsa couldn't make a final push, getting no closer than 13 the remainder of the way.
Horne paced the Hurricane with 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks. However, he was the only Tulsa player to score in the double figures as TU was limited to 36-percent shooting from the field and 3-point line.
Five SMU players finished in double figures, led by Kendric Davis' 17 points and seven assists. Marcus Weathers recorded a double-double, pulling down 13 rebounds to go with his 14 points. Emmanuel Bandoumel put up 14 and Michael Weathers added 11. The Mustangs shot 49 percent from the floor and 38 from three. SMU shot 56 percent on field goals and knocked down seven 3-pointers in the second half.
The Mustangs won the rebound battle 36-27 and had 18 assists to Tulsa's 13. Both teams shot 15 free throws and turnovers were close to even with the Hurricane turning it over 11 to SMU's 13.
The first half was a game of runs, with SMU jumping out to a 9-2 lead with a little more than five minutes gone from the half. After the slow start, the Hurricane exploded for 14 points in less than five minutes, grabbing a 16-13 advantage.
The run was fueled by a slew of 3-pointers from the Hurricane. Sam Griffin delivered the first to spark the run. LaDavius Draine knocked down a trey and Horne was good twice from beyond the arc.
SMU responded with a 15-2 run to take a 28-18 lead into the final media timeout of the opening half. The Hurricane weren't finished, though, outscoring the Mustangs 9-2 over the remaining 3:49 to bring the deficit to 30-27 at the half.
Horne led all scorers with 11 first-half points. Tulsa was outshot from the field 43 percent to 32 percent but held a 6-4 advantage on 3-pointers. Both teams shot only two free throws. The Hurricane were outrebounded 22-14 and SMU held a 12-4 advantage on points in the paint.
Tulsa finishes its road trip in Greenville, N.C. on Saturday when the Hurricane takes on East Carolina. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
