Tulsa Falls 2-1 as South Florida Scores One in the Final Inning

TULSA, Okla. –– South Florida broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh for a 2-1 victory over Tulsa Friday night in the first of a three-game series at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
 
USF improved to 36-12 and 6-4 in American Athletic Conference play, while Tulsa fell to 14-26 and 3-6-1 in league action.
 
Tulsa and South Florida will return to the field on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
 
With the score tied 1-1 heading into the seventh, the Bulls loaded the bases in the top half of the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field with two outs. Pochop ended the USF part of the inning on a ground out by the next batter.
 
Tulsa didn't give-in as the Hurricane loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles by MaKayla Jackson and Kylie Norwood while Imani Edwards reach base when she was hit by a pitch with just one out. However, USF's Corrick got the next two Tulsa batters out to close the game.
 
The Hurricane managed six hits against one of the nation's top pitchers as Georgina Corrick came into the contest with a 0.47 ERA. Norwood had two hits and scored Tulsa's lone run on her third home run of the season.
 
Norwood opened Tulsa's half of the first inning with a shot over the right field fence for the only Golden Hurricane run of the day.
 
USF put its first batter on base in each of the first two innings but both were stranded at second base. With two outs in third inning, Tulsa threatened as Edwards punched a pop up over first base and stretched it to a double but was stranded there.
 
The Bulls knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Vivian Ponn knocked a Pochop pitch over the left field fence with two outs.
 
USF added two runners in the top of the fifth but were stranded at second and third to keep the score even. Tulsa also added two runners in the bottom half of the inning. In the sixth both teams put one runner on base.
 
For the game, Tulsa's Pochop faced 29 batters and had seven strikeouts to give her 139 strikeouts on the season. Corrick had nine strikeouts for the Bulls in her seven innings.
