Houston and Cincinnati, the two teams that competed in the 2021 AAC Championship Game, were picked one-two in the 2022 preseason poll.
Tulsa, picked eighth this year, will look to prove the prognosticators wrong again.
A year ago, the Golden Hurricane was picked sixth in the preseason poll and finished in a tie for third place with a 5-3 league mark. In 2020, Tulsa was ninth in the preseason poll, but finished the season in a regular-season first place tie with a 6-0 league mark. A year earlier, the Hurricane fell 27-24 against No. 6-ranked Cincinnati in the 2020 American Championship Game on a last second field goal.
Only twice in the first nine years of the American Athletic Conference has the preseason favorite gone on to win the league championship, and once shared the title.
Houston has 243 points to outdistance Cincinnati by one point (242) for the top preseason ranking this year, while UCF was picked third with 225 points. Cincinnati did have the most first-place votes with 10, while Houston and UCF each had seven.
SMU is fourth, Memphis fifth, East Carolina sixth and Tulane seventh followed by Tulsa. South Florida, Navy and Temple round out the preseason poll.
Tulsa opens the 2022 football campaign at Wyoming on Sept. 3, and will open the home season against Northern Illinois a week later (Sept. 10) with a 6 p.m. kickoff. Season tickets can be purchased online at TulsaHurricane.com or by calling 918.631.4688.
