TULSA, Okla. –– Through 11 practice sessions, Head Coach Philip Montgomery has been pleased with the progress of the Golden Hurricane team. Tulsa had practice No. 11 Tuesday morning as the temperature reached 98 degrees with a heat index of 106.
"We're taking steps every day. We're stacking days on top of days. We have a pretty hungry team right now and guys are trying the best to come out every day and get better and work at a high level," said Montgomery
"When you think about day 11, it doesn't sound Like a tremendous amount, but when you look at the spring you get 15 workouts stretched over a month or more, and now we've had 11 practices in just two weeks on the field."
"Their bodies are feeling it. We're in the heat, guys are having to be mentally locked-in to what we have to accomplish and continue to work through some adversity and that's good for us. We need to feel that because it builds who we're going to be and the character we'll need as we get into the season," Montgomery added.
Tuesday was the second day in which the Hurricane saw different schemes that they'll face during the season.
"It's vitally important for us to get a taste of what we'll see throughout the year," said Montgomery. "I thought it was a lot better today than yesterday. Our energy and focus was better. Obviously, we'll go in and watch the tape and see how much better, but I thought our guys attacked the day the way we needed to."
"You go through spring and fall camp and all you do is work against each other. You're not going to see that same thing every week, especially from an offensive standpoint against our defense," said Montgomery. "Our defense is a little more unique. A lot of teams have some version of it in their defensive package, yet there not living in it. Seeing a four-man front, 4-under or heavy boxes and different things that we know we'll see throughout the year, we want to at least get a look at it now so we have some foundation to work off and it will not be the first time we've seen it and have to start all over it."
