Two Tulsa Soccer Players Named to Prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List

Tulsa men's soccer players Mariano Fazio and Alex Meinhard were named to the 2022 Hermann Trophy Watch List. The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation's highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.
"I think being named to the Watch List is excellent recognition for both Alex and Mariano for all the hard work that they have put in and all the success that they've had," Tulsa Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "We are looking forward to them continuing to grow as players and for both to have outstanding seasons this year."
Tulsa has had six players previously named to the list, including Justin Chavez (2010 and 2011), Chris Clements (2008), Ashley McInnes (2009 and 2010), Austin Neil (2010), Ryan Pore (2004) and Joe Salem (2009). Pore went on to be one of three finalists.
Fazio, a senior defender from Sevilla, Spain, tallied two goals last season, while helping TU record nine shutouts. He picked up 2021 NCAA Division I Men's All-America third team honors and East Region first team accolades. Fazio was also named as the American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Year, and earned all-conference first team and all-tournament team honors last season.
A junior from Tartu, Estonia, Meinhard is the reigning two-time American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He had a team-leading 12 goals and 26 points a year ago. He ended the season ranked first in the nation in penalty kicks (1.00), 15th in total goals (12), 22nd in game-winning goals (4) and 25th in total points (26). Meinhard was named to the NCAA Division I Men's East Region first team, was tabbed to the Top Drawer Soccer Best XI first team and picked up all-conference first team honors last year.
Fifteen men's players and 15 women's players become Hermann Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 30 following completion of Division I All-America voting following the fall season. Then on Dec. 7, the top three players from a final round of voting are the 2021 finalists. The 2022 winner is revealed on Jan. 6, 2023, at a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
