TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa football team put in a two-hour workout for the first day or preseason camp Wednesday morning, going from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., and escaping the extreme heat.
COACH MONTGOMERY TALKS HERE ABOUT THE FIRST PRACTICE.
"I thought we had good energy and focus today. The competition was good, we just need to communicate a little better, but for day one I was pleased," said Montgomery.
Montgomery talked about how today's first practice was smoother than previous first day practice sessions.
"Having OTA's, as I call them, during the summer where we could spent two hours each week on the field with the players, we came out a lot crisper than you would normally come out on day one," said Montgomery.
"This summer we were able to get on the field of them with a ball to do some things. You couldn't do anything competitive, but just being able to work on drills with all the new faces it gives you an opportunity to get them more adjusted, and so I think today was much smoother and it helps with the learning curve."
Montgomery was involved in drills with some of the position groups, throwing early in practice in a linebacker drill.
"That's just me," said Montgomery. "I like to be around our players. I want them to understand we're all on the same level. There's no job too big or too small. It gives me an opportunity to mess with them –– talk to them, give them a hard time and they give me a hard time if I throw a bad ball. I've always enjoyed the opportunity of working in those drills with them."
Tulsa will practice again in helmets and shorts on Thursday and Friday, beginning at 6:30 a.m., on the H.A. Chapman Stadium turf.
