PRACTICE #2: Montgomery Pleased with Progress

TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa football team again worked out early to avoid the heat but did get some light rain showers as the two-hour practice continued at H.A. Chapman Stadium Thursday morning.

"I was pleased with today because I saw that we corrected things that we messed up on from day one, and that's what you want to see – guys continuing to grow and continuing to get better," said Head Coach Philip Montgomery.

"We had very minimal heat today and then we had a little rain., but we were able to get it all in. There was good back-and-forth today."

Even though it's only day two, Montgomery has been pleased with the progress made in a spot that is perhaps the biggest question going into the season, the offensive line.
Tulsa lost four starters up front, including two to the NFL, and has a total of six newcomers on the offensive line in camp.

"I'm pleased with the progress of most of our new guys. They're picking it up well up front. Some obviously, are picking it up faster than others. It's a process," said Montgomery. "We had some returning guys that weren't able to go through spring ball because of injury, so it's good to see those guys back and that makes a difference for us."

"I'm excited about the work they're all putting in. We still have a long way to go but we're taking positive steps and those guys are locked in."

Tulsa will practice on Friday in shorts and helmets and will put on pads for the first time Sunday after taking Saturday off.

For tomorrow's practice session Montgomery wants to see a little more consistency on both sides of the ball. "I want to continue to see progress so that we can keep installing at the pace we're on. If we have to back it off we will, but right now they're taking it all in really well. I think the OTAs this summer has really helped us in preparing for fall camp. I think we're a little bit ahead right now.

FAMILIAR FACES: Tulsa's second-leading rusher of all-time, Shamari Brooks, is back on the field as an offensive intern for the Hurricane. Brooks ended his career last fall with 3,729 rushing yards in 45 career games. He also had 30 TD runs and set the school records for rushing attempts (793) and 100-yard rushing games with 17 … former Tulsa receiver and placements holder Cannon Montgomery, son of head coach Philip Montgomery, is an offensive graduate assistant with the Hurricane. Montgomery played in 46 career games and had seven receptions for 126 yards and his lone TD came at Ohio State last season.

ANOTHER LOCAL CONNECTION: Former Tulsa Union High School quarterback Mason Farquhar is in his first year as a defensive graduate assistant coach for the Golden Hurricane. Farquhar was an offensive student coach at Oklahoma the last two seasons.
