DENTON, Texas
– The Golden Hurricane women's soccer team went to North Texas and battled the Mean Green to a 2-2 draw in an American Athletic Conference game on Thursday evening.

The Golden Hurricane moved to 3-6-4 on the season, 1-0-3 in The American, while North Texas is now 8-2-1 and 2-1-1 in league play. Thursday's draw was the first time the Mean Green has not won at home this season. Tulsa has now gone seven games without a defeat.

"We challenged our team because we have not ever had four consecutive positive results in the American Athletic Conference until tonight," Tulsa head coach Jim Rhein said. "They rose to the challenge and it was fun to watch.

"Both teams had chances to win. That system they (North Texas) play is really scary where they smash it into the box. Any time you get a point on the road in conference, it's a positive."

Kayla Fernandez picked up her second goal of the season with a first half goal. She finished with a team-high four shots. Freshman Piper Szafranski opened her collegiate account with a fantastic shot shortly before halftime that put the Hurricane back on top.

"We have such a talented freshman class, it's great for our future." Rhein said. "I think getting that first goal is really going to help her going forward where she doesn't need to feel like she's chasing that first goal."

Kaylyn Simmons and Jordan Frederick each had an assist in the match. Simmons added three shots, while Frederick had two.

Both Tatum Sanders and North Texas' Maddie Ogden were called into action numerous times in the contest. Sanders made six saves while Ogden finished with five. Each keeper made multiple saves to keep sure goals out.

Tulsa will continue its three-game roadtrip with a game at conference newcomer Charlotte next Thursday, Oct. 12. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN+.

How it Happened
Kayla Fernandez put the Golden Hurricane ahead in the seventh minute with a stunning right-footed shot from outside the box. She received a pass from Simmons and while going to ground, hit a shot that smashed off the underside of the crossbar, off the back of the goalkeeper and across the line to give Tulsa the 1-0 advantage. It was the senior's second goal of the season.

North Texas tied the game just inside 12 minutes elapsed in the opening half. A deflected cross fell to Bailey Wesco, who was able to slide a shot by Sanders to equalize at 1-1.

The score was tied until the 37th minute, when Piper Szafranski picked up her first collegiate goal in style. Szafranski received a pass from Jordan Frederick five yards outside the box. The freshman took a touch to settle herself and unleashed a laser of a shot that beat a diving Ogden into the left corner of the net, putting Tulsa up 2-1 heading to the lockers.

Out of the break, it was once again Wesco who played the hero for the Mean Green. Sanders saved Wesco's first effort in the box in the 51st minute, but the rebound fell to Wesco again, whose second shot found the net to Sanders' left. The goalkeeper was able to get a glove on it, but not enough to change the trajectory.

The score remained 2-2 for the remaining 39 minutes of action, though each team kept attacking. Leah Diaz forced Ogden into action in the 53rd minute with a shot that forced a diving save from the North Texas goalkeeper. In the end, neither team could break the deadlock.
