TULSA, Okla. –– Two teams take the field at H.A. Chapman Stadium on Saturday afternoon each desperately looking for a victory. Both Tulsa and North Texas have identical 3-7 overall records and 1-5 marks in the American Athletic Conference.
Tulsa, having lost five straight contests, comes into Senior Day after taking 20th-ranked Tulane to the wire a week ago only to fall 24-22, while North Texas has lost four consecutive contests. The last win for each team came against fellow AAC opponent Temple.
Both teams have had a number of close calls. Six of North Texas' 10 games have been decided by six or less points as the Mean Green sit 1-5 in those games. Tulsa has lost three of its contests by seven or less with one of those going to overtime.
North Texas comes into today's game second in The American for total offense with 471.3 yards per game and passing offense with a 295.9 per game average. The Mean Green also still manages to rush for over 170 yards per game, while scoring 33.4 points to rank third in the AAC.
Tulsa's offense has been balanced with 184.1 yard on the ground and 190.8 through the air. Anthony Watkins leads the rushing attack with 668 yards on the year, while the passing game has not been as efficient as needed. Last week, Tulsa quarterbacks threw for a team season-best of 355 as true freshman quarterback Kirk Francis completed 22-of-34 passes for 345 of those yards in only his second game experience of the year.
The defenses are susceptible to the others offensive strength. Tulsa's AAC fourth-ranked rushing offense goes up against a North Texas defense that ranks last in the league, giving up an average of 266 yards on the ground. While the Mean Green passing game is second in the league, while Tulsa's pass defense gives up 288 yards through the air to rank 13th in the AAC.
Tulane's offense centers around the quarterback play of Chandler Rogers, who has thrown for 268.5 yards per game with a league-high 23 touchdowns. His main target is the league's second-leading receiver Ja'Mori Maclin with 825 receiving yards and also a league-high 11 TDs.
The day calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s.
