BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The University of Tulsa track team produced two champions to go with one meet record and five all-conference performances Friday at The American Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The Golden Hurricane men are sitting in fourth place (19 points) while the women are in fifth place (25 points) heading into Saturday.

TU will have three women and six men compete in tomorrow's finals, including Elizabeth Roca (400 meter-dash), Keely Jones (Mile), Chloe McEachern (Mile), Josh Sutton (60-meter dash and 200-meter dash), Sean Korsmo (800-meter run), Shay McEvoy (Mile), Christian Baker (mile), Chanel Muir (mile), Pete Johnson (mile).

Overall, the Tulsa women earned seven new personal bests, all coming in the 5,000-meter run. The distance runners accounted for five of the women's eight top-ten finishes on the day.

Junior Layla Roebke and senior Chloe McEachern finished first and second, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run. The pair receive their second consecutive indoor all-conference honors after placing third in the distance medley relay together in last year's indoor conference championships.

"The women had a solid start to the meet!" said Head Track and Field Coach Steve Gulley. "The highlight was taking the top two spots in the 5,000-meter run. It was phenomenal running by Roebke and McEachern. We got multiple athletes to qualify for finals, and we know that we're going to add more points tomorrow."

On the men's side, Hurricane athletes hit six new personal bests and accumulated 13 top-ten performances, including Scott Beattie (1st), Malte Propp (3rd), Ryan Shumaker (7th), Max Nores (8th) and Shuiab Aljabaly (10th) in the 5,000-meter run. Beattie's 13:52.51 finish to take first overall in the race marks a new meet record.

Josh Sutton (60-meter dash and 200-meter dash) was the only Tulsa athlete to qualify for finals in multiple events.

The men's distance medley relay team, comprised of Christian Baker, Novo Onovwerosuoke, Pete Johnson and Micheal Power, was disqualified following what would have been a meet record-breaking finish.

"Super tough and frustrating end to what was a great first day for the TU men," said Gulley. "However, we had some big-time highlights, including Josh Sutton qualifying in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, Scott Beattie's dominance in the 5,000-meter run and Sean Korsmo's qualifying performance in the 800-meter run. We'll have opportunities for points tomorrow, and the men have a chip on their shoulder after tonight."

Tulsa kicks off action tomorrow with the women's mile run at 11:20 a.m.
