The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped an 81-58 decision to SMU on Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum. The Golden Hurricane fell to 16-7 on the season and 6-4 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs moved to 15-7 overall and 6-4 in the league.

Temira Poindexter had a team-best 16 points, while Caroline Lyles added 10 points, and both Maddie Bittle and Katia Gallegos recorded nine points. Hadley Periman pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds, while Bittle had six assists and four steals.

Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, February 12 against Tulane beginning at 1:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

How it Happened
Maddie Bittle scored Tulsa's first five points before Caroline Lyles netted a three-pointer to pull the Golden Hurricane to within one, 9-8, with 5:31 on the clock. TU was held scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter, trailing 13-8 at the end of the frame.Â

SMU owned a 14-point lead, 29-15, at the 2:43 mark of the second quarter when Tulsa's season leading scorer in Temira Poindexter broke her scoring drought with a long jumper with 2:30 on the clock. Poindexter missed her first eight attempts in the contest. The Mustangs took a first half best 15-point lead into the break, 33-18.

Tulsa struggled to shoot the ball in the first 20 minutes, hitting just 29.2 percent of their field goal attempts, and were 22.2 percent from behind the arc and 25 percent from the free throw line.

SMU inched ahead to a 26-point lead, 51-25, at the 4:39 mark of the third quarter, but TU cut that deficit down by nine, 54-37, on a layup by Katia Gallegos with 1:59 left in the frame. The Mustangs climbed back up to a 23-point advantage, 64-41, with 10 minutes left to play. TU had 23 points in the quarter, more than doubling their first half points (18).

SMU was on fire in the third quarter, shooting 91.7 percent from the field, 100 percent from behind the arc (4-of-4) and was 5-of-8 from the line for 62.5 percent.

The Mustangs owned a game-best 27 points lead twice in the contest and claimed the 23-point victory.
